Future of Electric bikes in India

Thanks to the economy recovery, the electric bike sales gradually rising these days. Undoubtedly India is seen as future hub for electric bikes. In this article we shall discuss “what’s going on in the Indian electric bike industry? “

How electric bikes begin in India?

Bangalore based Eko vehicles, Gujarat based Electrothem were pioneers in electric bike business in India. India, being new to this technology taken time to accept this.Slowly they picked up sales because of electric bike advantage of no-license and no-registration. But as the technology still in nascent stage, there were a lot of service related problems faced by the costumer and due to the entire concept of electric bike lost the good will of costumers.

Then UK based Ultra Motors ltd and India based Hero Electric ( a Hero motor group company ) joined hands and flagged of a successful production and marketing of electric bikes along with good after sales service. Though the pair had successfully branded the electric bike concept in India, they got separated and currently launching their products individually.

Mean while Avon cycles, Lectrix Motors ltd, Ampere vehicles pvt ltd, TI cycles also launched their electric bikes and concentrating on the “know how”& “know why” aspects of electric bikes and hoping a big future for this business.

Some news articles from various media sources to show the future trend of the electric bike market in India.

Ultra Motor India is planning to launch three scooters, including one in the high speed category, and import a high- end model to India by next year. “Electric vehicles category is becoming more and more important globally and it will substantially grow in India as well. We are planning to sell 55,000 units in India in 2009-10,” Ultra Motor Chairman and CEO Joe Santana said. ( Source: UMI website )

Hero electric, the Hero Group company hopes to sell 25,000-30,000 bikes this year, up 40 per cent from last year. Its plant has an annual capacity of 120,000 units.

Electrotherm India Ltd (EIL) has posted revenues of Rs.200 million in the July-September period this year, compared to Rs.130 million in the previous quarter. During the quarter under review, the company reported a 54 percent increase in the sale of Yo-bikes. (Published by the Thaindian.com in 28th Oct, 2008)

BSA Motors , a Murugappa group company eyeing a market share of about 18-20 per cent by the end of this financial year ( 2009-10 ). The company plans to increase its dealership network from the present 30 in four southern states to about 100 within three months and thereafter increase it to about 120 by the end of this fiscal. Company is expects sales of about 25,000 bikes during the current financial year. (As reported by THE HINDU BUSINESS LINE on may 16th 2009.

Coimbatore based Ampere vehicle pvt ltd is slowly expanding their operations from electric bikes to hub motor and controller manufacturing. Their upcoming model V60 & Adya 60 has already bagged costumers due to its trendy look and performance.

The above new clips proves that this business is booming and the stated companies are having positive outlook in electric bike business in India.

Advertising campaigns

Currently only YO bikes, Hero Electric is airing a TV commercial and giving promotional offers for their customers. Lectrix motors ltd had presented their e-1 model to the “man of the match “of all the matches played in ICL 2008. Most other companies are airing their commercials on local channels and following traditional banner advertisements. Some companies are giving regional promotional offers for festive seasons.

What Companies should do?

Supply quality products to the customer along with good after sales service.
Innovative Marketing campaigns to attract the prospective users.

Innovations Defining San Diego?s Clean Transportation Future Showcased During Move San Diego?s Free October 27 Green Streets Expo & Public Concert

Innovations Defining San Diego’s Clean Transportation Future Showcased During Move San Diego’s Free October 27 Green Streets Expo & Public Concert

San Diego will be the first city in North America to feature car2go’s 24/7 all-electric car-sharing fleet.

(PRWEB) October 25, 2011

San Diego, CA: MOVE San Diego is working with a diverse array of public agencies, transportation companies, policymakers, developers and environmental non-profits to help citizens County-wide get up to speed on the job-creating technologies defining San Diego’s clean transportation future during its inaugural Celebrating Green Streets Expo, slated for October 27.

Free and open to the public, the Expo takes place from 3 pm to 6 pm along the tarmac leading up to the newly LEED Gold-certified Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier, where MOVE San Diego’s 2nd Annual Celebrating Green Streets Awards Program & Fundraiser will be held later that night.

Green Streets offers San Diegans a sneak peek at everything from car2go’s innovative electric car-sharing service – the first all-electric car-sharing program in North America, which will make electric drive vehicles available to San Diego residents twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week — to bi-pedal transportation options that are helping drive the growth of clean transportation solutions in the greater San Diego area.

“The current economic impact of the San Diego region’s clean transportation sector is over $ 311 million annually,” notes MOVE San Diego Executive Director Elyse Lowe. “The growth many of the small businesses showcasing their products at Green Streets are experiencing in this economy is testament to the market opportunities clean transportation alternatives present for San Diego – now and in the future,” she said.

Green Streets visitors can test their fitness metal on ElliptiGO, the world’s first elliptical bicycle, or zip around on Fly Rides’ electric scooters, a growing transportation choice for San Diegans and tourists alike. Join a flash mob in helping pedal-power one of the West’s first 16-person Dutch-designed social bicycles or see why more and more, people from 16 to 96 are finding their way to work or play via bikes like the stylish European-influenced Electra bicycle. All these vehicles are available for test rides as people groove to the lively sounds of folk-bluegrass-soul artists Trails and Rails (3:30 to 5:30 pm).

“We found the newly LEED Gold-certified Port Pavilion particularly fitting for this event in that it is central to the trolley, the Coaster, Amtrak, several bus routes, pedestrian walkways, bicycle paths — and the ferry —nearly the full gamut of current transportation options,” said Lowe. “These, along with the nation’s first, all-electric car2go downtown car-sharing service — and SDG&E’s incentives for plug-in electric vehicles — show how fast, easy and affordable it is to find healthy transportation alternatives that make good economic sense.”

SDG&E’s energy experts will be showcasing a plug-in hybrid Prius, Nissan LEAF and Chevy Volt interacting with new plug-in hybrid charging stations for fleet and personal rides. EV aficionados should stop by the SDG&E booth to learn how homeowners, business owners and multi-family property owners can enjoy money-saving EV time-of-use (TOU) utility rates by charging their electric vehicles during designated times. Visitors can add to their EV IQ by speaking with Real Goods Solar about EV-PV solutions.

San Diego is one of only six cities in the world with an arrangement with Google Maps that allows MTS to provide real-time arrival time data for users’ mobile devices. “Our aim is to make catching a ride on public transportation faster, easier and more reliable than ever,” noted MTS Chair Harry Mathis. “And with our roomy new low-floor trolleys and bicycle-friendly CNG buses, accessing public transportation is easier for citizens of all ages.” Participate in MTS’ Ready. Text. Go! texting contest and win free MTS bus and trolley rides for a year.

Celebrate Green Streets on the tarmac at downtown San Diego’s Broadway Pier: 1000 North Harbor Drive. Those interested in taking public transportation to the event from the north or south can take the blue line and get off at the Santa Fe Depot. Several bus routes stop within a block or two of the pier. The 810, 820, 850, 860, 923, and 992 stop only one block away from the Broadway Pier. Both the 2 and 210 stop two blocks to the West at Broadway & Columbia.

Be among the first 100 to visit and get a chance to win a year’s free public transit from MTS. Info: http://www.movesd.org. 619-702-4266.

Note: Following the Expo, join MOVE San Diego, San Diego City Councilmember Todd Gloria and a veritable who’s who among San Diego’s regional clean transportation leadership in honoring MTS Chairman Harry Mathis for his decades of civic leadership during the 2nd Annual Celebrating Green Streets Awards Program and Fundraiser.

The event is from 5 pm to 8 pm inside the Port Pavilion at the Broadway Pier. Tickets for the evening’s cocktail reception can be reserved by clicking here until October 26. They will also be available at the Celebrating Green Streets Expo on October 27.

Join MOVE San Diego the evening of October 27 in also honoring:

    San Diego City Council President Tony Young, winner of this year’s “Walk the Talk” Award;
    MTS for its Ready. Text. Go! real-time arrival time via text program, winner of the 2011 Public Innovator Award;

Is There An Electric Bike in Your Future?

How many times, recently, have you seen someone whizzing along on an electric bike and thought to yourself, “I really should look into getting one of those for our family?”

You really should, you know. My husband bought a rechargeable electric bike several years ago, primarily to keep up with the grandkids when we went camping, but it is not only handy at the campground, but around the neighborhood at home, too.

His bike, at the time he bought it, cost around 0. Now, prices still run from a bout 9 up, depending on what kind of bike you are looking for and what kind of batteries you plan to use in it.

My husband’s electric bike seems to be holding up very well. Although the battery that came with the bike is the older style lead-acid batter, it has been recharged many times and still works perfectly. Many of the newer electric bikes come with a more advanced type of battery which is much lighter, and more efficient.

]]>

At home, we often ride the local bike trail for some exercise, especially on days we are planning to eat out—our way to get rid of a few extra calories before piling more on. At least, I do, since I haven’t gone electric yet and have to pump all the way there and all the way back. If I lag too far behind, my husband pedals for a while until I catch up with him, but he does love to zoom along and watch other bikers eye him enviously as he passes them.

After we get home, my husband plugs his bike in to recharge so it will be ready for his next outing.

When we camp at the lake, he uses a small portable solar panel we carry in our RV to recharge the onboard battery which, in turn, recharges his bike for him. The grandkids love to recharge grandpa’s bike for him. Of course, now they each want new bikes, too.

Rechargeable electric bikes come in many varieties. There are 20 inch bikes, folding bikes, three-wheeled bikes, and electric bikes that are really more scooters or motorcycles than bikes.

The electric bike at the top of my list so far, is an adorable little red bike with nice baskets for carrying extra gear and a kickstand for parking it. Can’t you just imagine me flying around the lake on my bright red bike with a couple of grandkids pedaling their little legs off trying to keep up with Grandma?

Even if you have never given a thought to trading your old style pedal bike in for an electric one, why not take some time to find out a little about them? They tell us that gasoline is lurking just around the corner and, if that is true, more of us may be parking our cars and hopping onto bikes than ever before.
